Abstract: In our earlier work (Xie et al., Physica A 246 (1997) 529), the concept of higher-order atomic dipole squeezing (HOADS) was introduced. In this paper, we study further the effect of the dynamic Stark shift on HOADS in the two-photon Jaynes–Cummings model for a two-level atom initially prepared in a coherent superposition of states and interacting with a coherent radiation field. For a large mean number of photons, we arrive at closed expressions for the atomic inversion and both dispersive and absorptive components of the atomic dipole. It is found that the peak position, width and period of HOADS strongly depend on the initial phases of the coherent field and atom and the initial degree of excitation of the atom. For properly chosen parameters, the effect of the Stark shift may lead to a strong HOADS in the revival region of the atomic inversion. Our studies demonstrate that the Stark shift plays an important role in understanding the generation of higher-order squeezed states in two-photon processes in a high-Q micromaser cavity.
