Abstract:
The effect of signal period is studied in a two-dimensional cellular-automaton model with signal processing. We simulate vehicle dynamics with changing duration time of signals whose configurations are presented in a preceding paper [Physica A 324 (2003) 707]. The period changes the critical density for phase transition from flowing to jamming state. Multistage behavior of the transition, which has been observed in the paper, disappears as the period increases. The period changes not only jam structure in congested phase but also vehicle configurations in flowing phase. Design of signal arrangement and period setting are keys to control vehicle dynamics in two-dimensional traffic with crossings.
