Abstract: Being contemporaneous to Pollock, Riopelle was an iconic Canadian artist that developed complex painting patterns linked to the abstract expressionism movement. Whereas the complexity of Pollock’s paintings has been characterized by means of fractality methods, Riopelle’s opuses have attracted little attention. An in-depth characterization of the complexity of Riopelle’s paintings would provide valuable insights on the geometry underlying the aesthetic nature of his abstract visual art. The present work used a fractal analysis to characterize the complexity of Riopelle’s paintings for the period 1949–1953, a period when Pollock created some of his most influential paintings. The results of Riopelle’s paintings were compared with the fractal characteristics of Pollock’s paintings during the same period, indicating that Riopelle’s paintings are more complex in terms of fractality than Pollock’s paintings.
