Calculating vulnerability index of urban metro systems based on satisfied route

Abstract: Metro systems play an important role in metropolitan areas, due to their high efficiency to relieve the traffic pressure. However, metro systems have their own characteristics that are different from other traffic systems. Subway trains have their own track that they do not share with other trains. Once a station or link of line is under disruption, operation of this line must be affected. Metro system is a connectivity network, so the function of other lines will be influenced to a certain extent. As a result, metro systems have poor robustness, and managers need a reasonable index measuring their vulnerability and utilize the index to make some protocols. This paper introduces the tolerability index measuring vulnerability of metro systems from the perspective of passengers, and this new index will help managers identify the most important stations, and allocate limited resources to enhance their protective capability. This index is generated as a combination of satisfied route, shortest path and weighted average. We provide an algorithm to calculate tolerability index via structured programming. Lastly, we use a simple numerical example to demonstrate tolerability index rationality, effectiveness, and algorithm correctness.
