Nonlinear analysis for a modified continuum model considering electronic throttle (ET) and backward looking effect

Abstract:
In this research, a new car-following model is developed by considering the influences of “electronic throttle (ET)” dynamics and “backward looking” effect. The improved car-following model is transformed into a new continuum model through the relationship between the microscopic variables and macroscopic variables. The linear stability condition of the extended continuum model can be obtained according to the linear stability theory. The neutral stability curve shows that backward looking effect will improve the stability of traffic flow. The KdV–Burgers equation is derived by the nonlinear analysis, which can be used to describe the spreading behavior of traffic flow density wave in traffic congestion nearby the neutral stability line. Numerical experiments have been carried out, including the shock waves, rarefaction waves and energy consumption. The numerical simulation results indicate that the traffic flow stability can be enhanced by considering ET dynamics and “backward looking” effect. In addition, the above two factors can also effectively reduce energy consumption.
