Order–disorder transitions in systems of Janus-like particles on a triangular lattice

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 2020, vol. 548, issue C

Abstract: We have studied the phase behavior of two-dimensional systems of Janus-like particles on a triangular lattice, under the assumption of full lattice occupancy, using Monte Carlo method. It has been demonstrated that depending on the interaction energies between different parts of Janus particles, the structure of the orientationally ordered states and the nature of ordering transitions change. We have singled out four cases of different universality of the order–disorder transition. In particular, we have found the 3-state Potts, the Ising and the Kosterlitz–Thouless transitions, as well as the transition with the critical exponents α and ν equal to about 0.5 and 0.745, respectively. Our results have demonstrated that the crossover between the 3-state Potts and the Ising universality classes is gradual, and occurs over a certain range of the model parameters. In the case of systems which have demonstrated the presence of the Kosterlitz–Thouless transition, we have also found another transition at the temperatures below the Kosteritz–Thouless transition. The low temperature transition has been found to be either continuous and non-universal, or discontinuous (first-order), depending on the parameters defining the energies of interactions between different parts of Janus-like particles.
