Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 2021, vol. 567, issue C

Abstract: This paper presents a cellular automaton model of counterflowing stream of pedestrians, in which pedestrians walking in opposite directions are able to exchange position under certain local view and circumstance. Phase separation has been observed in the model and phase diagram including three phase regions is presented. Mean field analysis has been carried out to calculate the pedestrian flow rate, which indicates that the characteristic of minimum point of flow rate plays a critical role in phase behaviors of the system. Furthermore, the phase boundary based on the mean field analysis is partly in agreement with that obtained by simulation. Experiment data are also used to validate the model.
