Abstract:
We estimate the entropy production rate and the Kullback–Leibler divergence in discrete time series of electrocardiographic and the RR-interval signals of healthy and unhealthy patients. We show that these indices of irreversibility, applied directly to the electrocardiographic signals, may be used as a tool for discrimination between healthy subjects and patients with heart conditions. We test our method in a controlled Markov chain model. Finally, we test the performance of our methodology of discrimination by quantifying its accuracy using ROC analysis.
