Abstract:
In this paper, we develop a susceptible–infected–susceptible model for collective contagion and individual contagion in hypernetworks with higher-order interactions and heterogeneous structures. It is first analyzed the dynamics of epidemics spreading in a general hypernetwork in which infected nodes infect susceptible nodes through hyperedges. The constructed model is written as a hyperdegree-based mean-field model, a threshold for the spread of epidemics in a general hypernetwork is obtained, and the dynamical analysis is performed. The model is analyzed to have rich dynamics with backward bifurcation under certain conditions, i.e., there is a bistability phenomenon in which a disease-free equilibrium and an endemic equilibrium coexist. Finally, through numerical simulations, we obtain how the degree of heterogeneity in hypernetworks and the proportion of hyperedges that perform individual contagion affect the spread of epidemics in hypernetworks.
