Cluster variation theory for the isotropic-nematic phase transition

Abstract: In this paper, we extend the cluster variation theory for the isotropic-nematic phase transition to the three particle cluster approximation. Like in the magnetic case, for structures where there are triangles of nearest neighbours the extension from two to three particle clusters leads to improved values for the quantities that characterize the phase transition.
