Salt gradient solar ponds— upper convecting zone

Abstract: It is shown that density plumes fall from the surface of a pond cooled by evaporation, very much as plumes rise from a heated base. Such falling plumes are responsible for the generation and growth of an upper convecting zone in laboratory models, where it becomes a significant feature. But since the vertical extent of such plumes is likely to be of the order of 0.1 m or less, the phenomenon may be of little detriment in actual solar ponds where, in any case, surface evaporation is needed to remove excess heat.
