A novel two-layer nested optimization method for a zero-carbon island integrated energy system, incorporating tidal current power generation

Abstract:
Tidal current power generation (TCPG) has great potential to solve the unstable island energy supply problem because of strong predictability. However, TCPG construction and O&M are expensive and require appropriate capacity and scheduling strategies. Therefore, TCPG is added to a zero-carbon island integrated energy system (ZCIIES) coupled with electricity, thermal, hydrogen, and water as a flexible power in this study. Subsequently, a nested two-layer optimization approach is proposed. A multi-objective planning model in the upper layer, which aims at project economy and stability of power quality, is established to determine the optimal installed capacity; in the lower layer, a two-stage distributionally robust conditional value-at-risk (DRCVaR) model based on moment ambiguity is constructed to portray the uncertainty losses and improve the scheduling strategy. Finally, a case study is conducted, and the results demonstrate that: 1) TCPG was introduced into ZCIIES as a flexible power source, reducing energy storage capacity by 43.75% and total cost by 10.83% while ensuring stable operation. 2) The proposed method and two-stage DRCVaR model make ZCIIES operate effectively in balancing robustness and complexity, optimizing capacity allocation, ensuring economy, and quantifying the risk costs.
