Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics of amorphous polyhydroxyalkanoates (a-PHA) as substrates for anaerobic digestion (AD) and to explore ways to improve of a-PHA digestibility through co-digestion with PHA wastewater. The biochemical methane potential test was conducted under mesophilic conditions (35 °C), where the pH was maintained at 6.8–7.5. The methane yields of amorphous or semi-crystalline raw PHA and a-PHA resin were 0.57–0.58 L/g (biodegradability: 98.1–99.8 %) and 0.52 ± 0.02 L/g (88.8 %), respectively, showing high suitability as a substrate for AD. Smaller or more solubilized a-PHA particles were observed to correspond to faster methane production. In addition, co-digestion with PHA wastewater made it possible to further shorten the lag time of methane production. These results provide compelling evidence for the viability of AD as an efficient disposal method for PHA-based products in the future.
