Oil-soluble N-doped MoS2 as a catalyst for slurry-phase hydrotreating of waste oil

Abstract: Oil-soluble N-doped MoS2 (N-MoS2) was prepared through sulfurization process of oleic acid diethanolamide molybdate (ODEA-Mo) as a Mo precursor for slurry-phase hydrotreating of palm oil mill effluent (POME) to produce bio-hydrogenated diesel (BHD). The introduction of nitrogen dopants disrupts the coordination saturation environment of the MoS2 inert basal plane and generates more sulfur vacancies, and the optimal addition ratio of melamine and Mo was experimentally determined to be 1:1 (mass ratio). Positive correlation between temperature and degree of sulfurization (the proportion of Mo4+ in the Mo metal), and N-MoS2 exhibited the highest concentration of sulfur vacancies and a high degree of sulfurization of 80.29 % at 420 °C, with an overall particle size distribution of 40–140 nm. The hydrotreating temperature of 380 °C, H2 pressure of 6 MPa and residence time of 1 h were chosen to add N-MoS2 containing 1000 μg g−1, that obtained the highest BHD yield of 83.22 % and the optimal TOFMo of 0.072s−1.
