Two-stage catalytic upgrading of volatiles from pine sawdust pyrolysis to boost hydrocarbon-rich bio-oil

Abstract: A process of biomass pyrolysis coupled with two stages of catalytic bio-oil upgrading to obtain hydrocarbon-rich bio-oil has been proposed. The pyrolysis of pine sawdust was conducted at 500 °C in a free-fall reactor. The upgrading was carried out in a fixed-bed reactor downstream the free-fall reactor. With CeMnOx/Al2O3 as catalyst, the oxygen-containing compounds in the volatiles of biomass pyrolysis were partially deoxygenated and converted into hydrocarbon precursors by the first-stage upgrading. The precursors were further deoxygenated and reformed into hydrocarbon-rich bio-oil through the second-stage upgrading with HZSM-5 catalyst. Specifically, the first stage upgrading and the second stage upgrading were operated under different temperatures. Under the mass ratio of CeMnOx/Al2O3: HZSM-5: sawdust of 10:10:1 g/g/(g/min), the first-stage upgrading temperature of 500 °C and the second-stage upgrading temperature 600 °C, a bio-oil containing only light oil with 74.0 % hydrocarbons and 21.5 % oxygenated compounds has been obtained.
