Abstract: Due to the increasing awareness of European societies and new legal regulations, the role of renewable energy sources in individual heating has been growing. One of the forms of renewable heat production is the use of biomass-pellet boilers. Conducting the combustion process of this type of fuel in an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly manner requires the appropriate design of the burners. The subject of the analysis was a burner with a nominal power of 10 kW. The mathematical model of the processes occurring in such a device was built and implemented in Ansys Fluent numerical environment, which is the main achievement of this study, as numerous phenomena physical considerations were taken into account. The basic assumptions of the model and the details of the modelling process, such as geometry and computational mesh, boundary conditions, approach to fuel modelling and solver settings, are presented. Particular attention was paid to the combustion process taking place in the burner. This process requires assumptions regarding the shape and behaviour of the fuel bed, chemical reactions and emissions generation. The process of NOx formation was included in the adopted model. The obtained results were validated against experimental data.
