Abstract: The next-generation anaerobic digestion, anaerobic digestion coupled with microbial electrolysis cell (AD-MEC), is considered a good option for energy recovery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of organic loading rate (OLR), electrode's surface area (double set of electrodes), and applied voltages on biogas enhancement during AD-MEC fed with cattle manure and green grocery waste. Overall, the reactors with double set of electrodes were found significantly efficient, having higher biogas yield, and higher stability than those with a single set of electrodes. The control setup without electrode was failed at OLR 3 g VS L⁻1day⁻1 While the highest biogas yield was achieved at an OLR of 3 g VS L⁻1day⁻1 with 0.7 V in reactor having double set of electrodes. This approach, using multiple smaller electrodes in the reactor, will enhance biogas production, improve voltage distribution, lower resistance, and allow for scalable efficiency.
