Abstract:
Fresh leachate from municipal solid waste was evaluated for concomitant hydrogen production while primarily treatment with in anaerobic packed bed biofilm reactor (APBR). Microbial biofilm was developed on K3-Kaldnes carriers seeded with thermally pre-treated anaerobic sludge. After the start-up phase, the performance of the system was evaluated at eight hydraulic retention times (52–3 h) for the production of hydrogen as biofuel and VFAs as valuable byproducts, together with COD removal. Under mesophilic conditions (37 °C) and pH control in the recycle flow of the reactor, HRT was reduced from 52 h to 3 h, increasing the hydrogen concentration from 36.5 % to 51.5 %. At HRT 52 h, the maximum yield of 0.64 mmol H2 g−1 COD was obtained. As the hydraulic retention time was decreased, the hydrogen generation rate was enhanced, reaching a maximum of 4.87 L H2 d−1 L−1 at 3 h HRT.
