3E analysis of a wind-solar-biomass energy generation in context of regional multi-microgrids: A case study of Sivas, Türkiye

Abstract:
The creation of self-sufficient energy regions by making the best use of regional energy resources is extremely important to ensure energy sustainability. For this purpose, regional multi-microgrid (MG) regions of medium and low voltage (MV-LV) should be established, where the energy balance is provided according to the potentials of each region. The main problem addressed in this study is to evaluate different energy cases in terms of payback periods and investment amounts according to the current incentive amounts to develop self-sufficient regional multiple MGs by also utilising wind and solar energy potentials for regions with high biomass potential. For this purpose, energy, economic and environmental (3E) analyses of the region under consideration should be carried out. This study aims to analyse the 3E aspects of wind, solar, and biomass (WSB) resources in Sivas's region in order to ensure the energy sustainability and efficiency in multiple MG concept to create a model for similar regions. It identifies the potential and what needs to be done for the region to operate as a multi-MG. 3E analyses are carried out to assess regional energy sustainability; Rayleigh analysis is used for wind energy, PV power model considering temperature and radiation effects is used for solar energy, and animal waste-based methane production calculations are used for biomass energy. The fastest payback period of the four different generation cases considered is 6.31 years for Case1, which uses 70 % biomass, 20 % solar and 10 % wind. In addition, the greenhouse gas emissions for this scenario are determined to be 835.27 ktonnes.
