Improved metrics for evaluating self-consumption and self-sufficiency rates in ESS-integrated renewable energy systems

Abstract: To address the limitations of conventional self-consumption rate (SCR) and self-sufficiency rate (SSR) metrics in integrated PV-ESS systems, this study proposes new indicators that distinguish between solar PV-based and grid-based ESS charging sources. By accounting only the PV-charged energy stored in the ESS as self-consumption, the proposed method enables a more accurate evaluation of renewable energy contributions. Using real-world data from a 56-household smart village in Busan, South Korea, simulations were conducted under three ESS operation modes—Self-Consumption Mode, Peak-Shaving Mode, and Retail Rate Dispatch Mode—and across various profiles including initial SOC levels (10–50 %), load levels (low/average/high), and weather conditions (clear/cloudy). The results revealed that conventional metrics failed to reflect ESS operational differences, producing identical values across all scenarios regardless of operating strategy. In contrast, the proposed metrics accurately captured changes in ESS behavior and renewable energy usage by excluding grid-charged electricity. This method improves the reliability of SCR and SSR evaluations in renewable energy-integrated ESS systems.
