Experimental evaluation of a hybrid small-scale reversible heat pump/ORC system coupled with an adsorption chiller

Abstract: The combined need for heating, cooling and electricity in the building sector has led to the formation of complex energy systems trying to address all types of demand. In this framework, the SolBio-Rev project focuses on developing a renewables-based system to fulfill a significant portion of the energy requirements. This study focuses on the testing of a cascade chiller system utilizing an adsorption chiller on top, coupled with a reversible heat pump/ORC (RHP/ORC) prototype which acts as the bottoming cycle. The integrated system underwent a series of tests under variable compressor rotational speeds and different operating conditions in the adsorption chiller, including its driving and heat rejection temperatures. The investigation concluded that the system operates efficiently only at compressor rotational speeds above 1200 rpm, since compressor efficiency is severely impaired below this threshold due to low volumetric performance. Additionally, the tests revealed that the low isentropic efficiency of the VCC compressor restricts the VCC system's performance, resulting in a maximum COP of 5.50. Finally, the comparison between the best- and worst-case operating scenarios for the adsorption chiller highlighted the impact of the MT HEX inlet temperature, reaching a maximum COP of 0.64 under the optimal operating conditions.
