Abstract:
The prototype of an underwater micro hydropower system which is of the same size as a D-size lithium battery is modelled, optimized and tested in deep water. The system is integrated into a telemetry tag carried by marine animals. It converts the hydropower stemming from the repeated diving behavior of the animals to power the marine animal telemetry tag. The system is modelled, and then sensitivity analysis is conducted to identify the influence of parameters on the output electrical energy under different water pressures. Based on the genetic algorithm, the optimization of the system is carried out. Compared with the original system, the net electrical energy output of the optimized system increases by 30 %, 19 % and 18 % under water pressure of 4Mpa, 6Mpa and 8 MPa respectively. In the prototype test, under water pressures of 8 MPa and 6 MPa, the energy conversion efficiency is 26.4 % and 25.6 % respectively, which is several times the efficiency of existing similar micro hydropower systems. With this efficiency, the system can replace the original D-size lithium battery and significantly increase the tag's electrical energy supply.
