Tide-generated energy at the Amazon estuary: The use of traditional technology to support modern development

Scott Douglas Anderson, Manoel Nogueira and Fernando Luiz Tavares Marques

Renewable Energy, 1993, vol. 3, issue 2, 271-278

Abstract: For over 150 years the tides in the Amazon estuary were used to power sugar cane mills. Considering this successful use of tidal energy in the past, we are proposing a system to use it in the present, to generate electricity on a small scale for thousands of rural residents of the estuary, who have no prospect of being tied to the regional power grid.
