Grid connected photovoltaic plants in Vienna

Abstract:
A survey of the present state of photovoltaic electricity generation in Vienna is given. The question of whether it is worth investing in photovoltaic plants in a city is examined from different points of view including cultural aspects. Plants on public buildings are described as well as systems for private homes. Two plants on schools are outlined which are equipped with an extensive measuring system for research and also for teaching purposes. Tests have shown that the influence of the inverter causing voltage harmonics is negligible as well as the reduction of efficiency by soiling of the panels due to air pollution in a town. In the following, attention is drawn to plants for private homes. By the example of one grid connected private plant, out of about twenty that are installed in Vienna at the moment, the appropriate size of a plant for a four-person household is discussed.
