Emerging green technologies for vehicle propulsion systems

Abstract:
The rapid growth of electric engine application as vehicle propulsion system is one of the main approaches to tackle its oil dependence. This paper aims at investigating main technological routes, characteristics of main inventions, and indicating the most promising and emerging technologies in vehicle propulsion systems. Based on solar and wind inventions, this paper analyzes 3,876 patents of green vehicle propulsion (GVP) developed between 1990 and 2016. Theoretical findings proposed a new classification (long-term, recent, and occasional innovators) for patent assignees that can be applied to other technological fields. It also pointed out the robustness of technological routes as a tool to investigate the technology evolution and to identify the most emerging and promising inventions. The results also denote a non-collaborative development and protection profile for GVP technologies implying that companies prefer to solo development instead of joint R&D. Practical contributions aim to support R&D managers and industry experts in their decisions, offering quantitative and qualitative information about most relevant technologies, players and relationships, as well as their interest of market protection.
