Influencing mechanism of reverse knowledge spillover on investment enterprises’ technological progress: An empirical examination of Chinese firms

Abstract:
The effect of reverse knowledge spillover on the technological progress of investment enterprises has been a hot research area internationally, but its mechanism has not yet been revealed. This study investigated the influencing mechanism of reverse knowledge spillover on investment enterprises’ technological progress. The knowledge structure theory was adopted to interpret reverse knowledge spillover from three perspectives—breadth, depth, and intensity—to build a theoretical model. The hypotheses were verified using empirical data from China's listed manufacturing enterprises. The findings revealed that the breadth and depth of reverse knowledge spillover can help promote the technological progress of investment enterprises, which is subject to positive regulation of the intensity of the former. At the early stages of reverse knowledge spillover, the effect of its depth on the technological progress of the investing firm is greater than that of its breadth, and vice versa in later stages. Our work extends the knowledge structure theory to the study of reverse knowledge spillover and fills the gap in the literature on dynamic knowledge structure. This study is also the first to identify the correlation and differences between knowledge depth and intensity.
