Case study of a healthcare virtual community model

Kun-Huang Huarng, Cheng-Fang Lee and Tiffany Hui-Kuang Yu

Technological Forecasting and Social Change, 2023, vol. 188, issue C

Abstract: The increase in the global life expectancy in current modern times concurs with the rise in chronic conditions and diseases. In addition to the threat to life posed by these diseases, they can also lead to chronic conditions in the elderly, which not only put an immense strain on the healthcare capacity but also poses a tremendous burden on social resources. Therefore, this study used the two-tiered business model, including innovation, resource, market, and value, as the basis to propose a healthcare virtual community model. Furthermore, this study identified social support as well as healthcare support as important factors to categorize four healthcare virtual communities, such as professional healthcare, ordinary, medical, and commercial communities. We list cases for each category to exemplify each category of communities.
