The impact of environment on enhancement of tourism system resilience in China: The moderating role of digital technology

Abstract:
Tourism is characterized by environmental sensitivity, and ecological impacts such as natural disasters have a profound impact on the vulnerability of tourism systems. Exploring the impact mechanisms and resilience of tourism systems provides new research perspectives on their ability to withstand vulnerability and promote sustainable development. This paper uses panel data from 2006 to 2021 as the research sample, and the resilience index for the tourism sector is constructed based on the DPSIR theory, using the entropy right TOPSIS method. The fixed effects model verifies the effect on tourism system resilience, while the mediation effect is tested through a mediation model. The research results show that: (1) the composite index of tourism system resilience in 31 provinces is on the rise, and the spatial distribution of ecological impact types in China is distinct due to geological variations, the temperature zone between the north and south, and the terrain between the east and west; (2) ecological impacts significantly and positively influence tourism system resilience, as established after various robustness tests; (3) there is some intermediary effect between ecological impacts and tourism system resilience; (4) ecological impact varies across different economic cycles.
