How do we pivot? Facilitators, inhibitors, and strategies of tech healthcare startups before, during, and after a crisis

Abstract: Prior literature on tech healthcare startups has focused on specific aspects that facilitate or inhibit their business, but it has not provided a comprehensive understanding of their journey across various time frames, particularly those encompassing a crisis period. This qualitative study identifies the facilitators and inhibitors tech healthcare startups encountered before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and the strategies used by these businesses to survive and even scale up their operations during each period. Open-ended essays were employed to gather responses from 48 participants who worked in health tech startups during all three-time frames. The acquired data was analyzed using the Gioia method. The pivoting theory of startups was applied to understand how tech healthcare startups transitioned during these periods while emphasizing different capabilities and resources in their organization during each phase. Three aggregate codes were obtained—pre-crisis, during-crisis, and after-crisis—each of which included facilitators, inhibitors, and strategies. This study contributes to prior literature on tech healthcare startups by providing a comprehensive and integrated picture of the pivots they made as they moved from one period to another, each involving a distinct and emerging set of challenges and conditions.
