The evolution of thinking about the State in Peter Evans’s view – a theoretical approach

Vinicius Peçanha ()

Brazilian Journal of Political Economy, 2022, vol. 42, issue 3, 638-663

Abstract: The paper discusses the evolution of Peter Evans’ thought about the theoreticalconditions in which the State can act in order to promote the development of a country. Ina first moment of his thinking, Evans builds the concept of “inserted autonomy”, which isthe basis for his analysis of the development of countries, focused on capital accumulationand industrial transformation. Evans later recognizes the need to expand this discussionto broader social groups. The approach used by the author, although similar, is built ona different theoretical body, which involves a new conceptualization of development. Inthis second stage, Evans approaches the idea of deliberative democracy as the mainstay ofdevelopment, conceptualizing the 21st century developmental state model.
