Is intergenerational poverty in Brazil transmitted by sociobehavioral factors?

Abstract: This article analyzes the determinants of intergenerational poverty in Brazil,based primarily on sociobehavioral aspects described in Lewis (1966) and variables on themoral values of the interviewees extracted from the WVS. To this end, the Logit model andits marginal effects were estimated. It was found that almost half of the poor in Brazil inheritedpoverty from their parents. Having many children, being an evangelical, and living in theNortheast region increase the chances of being intergenerationally poor, while the respondent’sand his/her father’s years of schooling reduce this risk. Poverty and its transmissionacross generations must be understood from a broader perspective, which allows the influenceof cultural values to be incorporated into its causes.
