CORE works for non-majors and majors alike: a response to Professor Tinari

Abstract: Professor Tinari raises some important considerations in his note on the CORE Econ curriculum. In response, I offer four short comments based on my own experience of teaching with it. My experience suggests that CORE Econ offers a better approach to teaching non-economics majors than other traditional textbooks because it is anchored in real-world problems. This focus on real world problems enables it to highlight points of connection and distinction between micro and macro models and to devote adequate attention to both market efficiency and failure. The plan for future editions of CORE is to deal more explicitly with investment and living standards. I encourage teachers to try using CORE, based on my own positive experience with it.
