Abstract: Internationalization in higher education is an inevitable result of the globalization and knowledge-based economy of the 21st century. The purpose of this paper is to identify the main paths taken into account by Romanian universities while reconsidering their international programs and strategies in order to cope with the increasing education and labour market pressures. Based upon international and local experience, we shall discuss the challenges encountered in aligning the internal culture with the internationalization objectives in order to enhance effectiveness of outcomes. The framework provided helps to understand the different approaches to internationalization and may prove helpful from both a managerial and research perspective.
