Strategic Integration of Artificial Intelligence in History Education: Challenges and Best Practices in Higher Education in Uganda

Abstract: This study explored the strategic integration of Artificial intelligence (AI) in history education within higher education institutions in Uganda. As AI technologies rapidly evolve, their potential to transform pedagogical approaches, enhance student engagement, and improve learning outcomes becomes increasingly evident. This study examines the current state of AI adoption, identifies key challenges faced by educators and institutions, and delineates best practices for effective integration. The study adopted a qualitative research design to explore the perceptions, experiences, and challenges faced by higher education educators and administrators regarding the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in history education. By examining the current state of AI adoption in History Education, this research identified effective strategies for implementing AI-powered tools, such as adaptive learning systems, virtual historians, and historical simulations. The findings revealed that successful integration requires a holistic strategy encompassing capacity building, infrastructural investment, stakeholder engagement, and clear policy guidelines. The research concluded that while AI presents significant opportunities for revolutionizing history education in Uganda, addressing infrastructural and human resource challenges is crucial for sustainable adoption. Based on these insights, the study recommended establishing national AI policy frameworks, enhancing faculty training programs, fostering partnerships with technology providers, and promoting awareness of AI’s benefits among educators and students. Implementing these best practices could position Uganda’s higher education to leverage AI effectively, ultimately enriching history teaching and learning experiences.
