The difficulties encountered by local traditional Meediterranean products within the European Community market when faced by technological products from the North of Europe call out for new strategies which are able to strengthen the weaker food products. In order to set out and apply the new strategies investements are needed and the necessary time to make the changes and render them operational. It is for these reasons that we believe that the proposal of an International Observatory to help the local food products of the Mediterranean areas of the Ue would be useful. This would have three functions: to draw up a list of the local food products of the area; to investigate the market situation; to intervene, also with the help of the Ue, in times when there is a fall in production or price.
