Effect of Internal Migration on Development in Turkey

Abstract: The Republic of Turkey is a country that has become a late nation, and in parallel with this, it is a late capitalist country. Since its establishment, it has experienced and continues to experience three main waves of internal migration. This internal migration wave negatively affects the social class structure, urbanization, and industrial and agricultural production. Due to an unbalanced population distribution, Türkiye has experienced significant problems in the development process. The main question of this study is what the effect of population and internal migration on the development of the country in this process of change is. As a method in the study, population records in the country and studies in the literature were taken as basis. The findings obtained as a result of the study confirm the previous studies. In addition to previous studies, the effect of the current class structure on development beyond its sociological effects has been revealed. Due to internal migration, the peasant class has come to the brink of extinction and the urban class has also decreased a lot. Due to the unplanned urbanization on the periphery of the city, the suburban neighborhoods formed by illegal construction have become the majority of the cities. However, changes have also occurred in the bourgeois class due to variable economic policies depending on political changes. The productive population has become inefficient due to the unhealthy class structure that has formed. As a result, internal migration has had a negative impact on the development process.
