Fiscaoeconomia, 2025, issue 3

Abstract: Emerged as a criticism of mainstream economics’ universal and uniform approach to the economic problem, institutional economics provides a perspective that considers the economy as a process of institutionalization. From this standpoint, the institutionalization experience of a country is not independent from the abstract factors shaped by the historical accumulation of the society of that country, such as informal rules, institutions, faith, and culture. From this point of view, analyzing period novels and stories witnessing the change and development processes of those abstract factors would contribute to the comprehension of both the existing institutional structure and the development process of that structure. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the institutional structure of the labor market in Türkiye through Orhan Kemal’s Bereketli Topraklar Üzerinde. The evaluations have been made on the account of transaction cost theory. In the analysis part, the problems with employees’ employment process, working conditions, knowledge about labor law, living standards, relationships with employers and with other employees and their other problems, and the situations or the structural form of imperfect information or uncertainty causing these problems are determined. Finally, the transaction cost resulting from the problem and institutional inefficacy that needs to be solved are specified.
