The Impact of Gender on Urban and Rural Areas

Abstract: Women constitute a significant component of both social life and the workforce in both rural and urban areas. However, issues stemming from gender inequality persist in both urban and rural contexts, compelling women to continuously advocate for their rights and strive to enhance their visibility. This study adopts a gendered perspective to examine women's experiences in urban and rural environments. While both urban and rural settings ostensibly offer a shared living environment for women and men, a patriarchal construct is observed to dominate within gender-biased viewpoints. From a gender perspective, the roles ascribed to women in both urban and rural areas severely restrict their agency, leading to their insufficient utilization of urban and rural resources and consistent exposure to discrimination. Women are frequently observed to encounter challenges and occupy disadvantaged positions in social, economic, and political spheres concerning decision-making, access to services, acquisition and utilization of opportunities, and labor force participation, resulting in a continuous erosion of their rights. Within this scope, the study aims to ascertain the nature of the relationships between diverse gender dynamics in urban and rural settings and these spaces, by analyzing the meanings that places attribute to women and men. The research employed a comprehensive literature review methodology, identifying gendered practices concerning women in both national and international relevant literature pertaining to urban and rural contexts. The study posits, from a review-based perspective, that gender-biased approaches continue to prevail in urban and rural areas.
