Letters and Historical Context: Reconsidering the Meaning of Scholarly Correspondence for Political Theory

Abstract: This article treats the letter not as a secondary archival source for political theory, but as a distinct textual genre through which historical contextualization can be substantially deepened. Its central claim is that scholarly letters render the conditions of intellectual production, such as material constraints, political threats, experiences of exile, and relations of intellectual responsibility, more directly visible than published works, thereby bringing into view the historically conflictual and tension-laden ground of theory. The article further positions the debate over the corpus (külliyat) as a methodological and ethical threshold: the inclusion of letters, diaries, and memoirs exceeds a merely editorial preference and constitutes a normative decision about which forms of thought are recognized as valid. In this context, the letter’s regime of address, structured through interpersonal relationality, and the semi-private publicity it generates are analyzed as a communicative practice that accelerates intellectual circulation. Finally, because exile and forced migration recur as salient motifs in scholarly correspondence, the article argues that such letters function, especially around these motifs, as a conceptual laboratory for political theory.
