Abstract:
This paper surveys the recent research on family friendly policies (primarily leave policies relating to child birth) in the Nordic Countries and their economic effects on the position of women in the labour market. Effects of family friendly policies on equal opportunity and on women’s labour force participation are well-known and usually considered to be positive. On the other hand, Nordic family policies are costly, and furthermore, we bring evidence of certain unintended negative consequences for gender equality and women’s career progression.
