English Language Teaching, 2018, vol. 11, issue 12, 116

Abstract: Lack of cultural awareness and insufficient cultural background knowledge directly obstruct students’ learning competence in college English teaching. Therefore, it’s of great importance to enhance students’ cultural awareness and develop their background knowledge about the target culture. This paper intends to illustrate the influence of cultural background knowledge deficiency on English learning, analyze the possible causes of students’ lack of cultural background knowledge, and suggest approaches to enriching students’ background knowledge of the target culture.
