Social determinants of HIV/AIDS: implications for policies in emerging markets countries

Abstract: The article provides a critical review of the literature to understand the determinants of HIV/AIDS from a broader and more structural perspective, and to suggest implications for policy makers. The notion of social determinants seeks to theoretically and empirically explain how social organisation impacts health. The article applies this perspective particularly to the field of HIV/AIDS. It does so by first explaining basic concepts of population health and social epidemiology. It follows with an account of social determinants of health as they relate to HIV/AIDS in the North American and in emerging markets countries, as well as on the impacts of HIV/AIDS. The article finalises with a discussion of policy and programmatic implications emerging from the review.
