Abstract: Competitiveness of industrial enterprises is seen as the main issue in many countries over the world. Scientific investigations reveal that industrial enterprises have to focus on innovation processes. Therefore, the transition toward innovative development of industrial enterprises is seen as the prerequisite for long-term success. However, some companies still apply outdated technologies what leads to the weaker competitive position in the global market. The paper aims to reveal the approaches of innovative development, adopted by Ukrainian industrial enterprises. The emphasis is put on metals and mining companies, playing an important role in the country's economy. The investigations, based on statistical data, let us disclose what innovations are developed by enterprises and what external and internal factors foster and hinder development of innovations. The research contributes to scientific elaborations by providing new insights into theory development.
