Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to create a model of succession management planning. The sample, consisting of 16 managers, was formed using snowball sampling. The data were analysed, using Strauss and Corbin's (1998) three-stage coding process. Results indicate that the modern succession structure acts as a central theme in the design of the integrated model of succession planning. The causal conditions, at three levels of individual, organisational and managerial structures, mediated by the modern succession structure, have impact upon the succession management accomplishing strategies. These strategies are: policy making, candidate evaluation, candidate development, and the effectiveness assessment. Of course, confounding conditions at three micro, organisational and macro levels, as well as the contextual conditions in three areas of the organisational outlook, contexts realising organisational outlooks, and organisational policies, influence these strategies. The outcomes of these strategies and the influencing processes eventually find expressions at (individual), (unit) and (organisational) levels.
