Abstract:
In a knowledge-based economy, it is an accepted fact that learning and innovation are important ingredients for global competitiveness. It is also true that old assumptions, beliefs, and routines need to be unlearnt and replaced. Given the exponential rate of disruption, should unlearning be valued more than learning? Insights from interviews with senior executives, from companies operating in India, have been integrated with literature. The proposed framework explores the interplay between learning and intentional and spontaneous unlearning. The study reveals that even during times of disruption learning continues to be the focus of most organisations. But the magnitude of disruption and time span within which individuals and organisations want to witness change influences the choice between intentional and spontaneous unlearning.
