Abstract:
This introductory paper first outlines the difference between mass production and lean production, paying particular attention to the emphasis given to lean production as a human system. It then introduces the salient aspects of the four papers that comprise the Special Issue, highlighting issues of similarity and difference, before isolating the four relevant themes emerging from these papers and integrating them with the extant literature.
