Research trends and directions in learning spaces: a scientometric analysis based on CiteSpace and VOSviewer

Abstract: Using scientometric visualisation tools (i.e., CiteSpace and VOSviewer), this study analyses Scopus database publications on learning space research to illustrate trends and identify potential directions in this multidisciplinary field. The findings demonstrate a three-stage development and emphasise the interaction of spatial and non-spatial elements. The study encourages an in-depth comprehension of learning spaces and their influence on instructional strategies and student results. It highlights the requirement for a multidisciplinary approach that includes pedagogy, social science, information science, and architecture for cutting-edge research paradigms. The study also highlights research frontiers, including the connection between learning spaces and online learning, COVID-19, and creativity. This study contributes to a nuanced understanding of learning spaces and their role in fostering effective teaching and learning experiences in the 21st century by offering insightful information that can be used as a reference by education authorities, school planning and construction departments, and information technology departments.
