International Journal of Innovation and Learning, 2008, vol. 5, issue 4, 353-377

Abstract: The research attempts to capture, organise, and prioritise experiences relating to performance measurement from top management at three Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Thailand. Its primary outputs are a set of baseline Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for SMEs when implementing the balanced scorecard with the prioritised business circumstances regularly facing SME management. This research is based on a need to address a lack of quality information that potentially impacts the quality of managerial decisions. For this research, there are a total of 38 KPIs with five key business circumstances constantly facing top executives of SMEs. The data-collection for this research can be separated into two stages. The first stage was for the frequency of KPIs requested during January–December 2005 while the second stage was for the verification of the proposed taxonomy from January to June 2006. The research's benefits and limitations are discussed.
