Abstract:
Fit manufacturing was developed by combining lean, sustainable and agile manufacturing to tackle budding competition from low-labour cost countries and by considering shifting customer demands. Fit manufacturing also helped industries in making a successful shift towards Industry 4.0 thereby linking four manufacturing themes: strategy, leadership, process and technology. The goal of this study is to assess fit manufacturing readiness in a heavy engineering industry in viewpoint of Industry 4.0 utilising Grey theory approach. This paper presents readiness evaluation of fit manufacturing through 86 sub-dimensions identified from literature review clustered into nine dimensions. Expert inputs are obtained as linguistic terms which are converted into Grey numbers and used to calculate overall Grey performance index (OGPI). Grey performance importance index (GPII) was further calculated to recognise ill-performing areas in the industry. Finally, it was observed that based on readiness level assessment of fit manufacturing, the case industry required further improvements.
