Abstract: This paper investigates the effect of graphene reinforcement on the mechanical properties and machinability of aluminium metal matrix composite (MMC). The MMCs are synthesised from pure aluminium matrix by reinforcing graphene particles with 0.5 wt. %, 1 wt. %, 2 wt. % and 3 wt. % using stir casting process. The load bearing capacity in compression and the hardness is observed to be improved with graphene reinforcement. The optimisation of multiple performance characteristics [material removal rate (MRR), surface roughness (Ra) and noise] is carried out in turning of graphene-based Al-MMC using polycrystalline diamond (PCD) carbide-insert tool under dry environment and compared with that of the pure aluminium. Cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut and wt. % of graphene are considered as the controlled parameters. Response surface method (RSM) is used for the design of the experiment and optimisation. The wt. % of graphene reinforcement is found to improving the surface quality and reducing the noise during dry-turning.
